Medical service
In case of illness or accident any hospital, health centre (called poliklinika) or surgery (called ambulance situated in the countryside) can be contacted. First aid will be provided at any health care institution in Latvia at the admissions department or accident and emergency centre. Twenty four hour medical care is available at all hospitals and also some health centres. To call-out emergency medical care team: phone 03, from a mobile phone 112.

Medicine can be bought only at pharmacies in Latvia and there is an extensive network of pharmacies around the country. They can also be found inside some hospitals and health centres, shopping malls, stations etc. Working hours vary from place to place but twenty four hours pharmacies marked with the letter 'A', can be found in major settlements.

Post and Telecommunications
There are post offices (signposted 'Pasts') in all inhabited places across the country. Opening hours at main post offices are from 08.00 (07.00) - 19.00 (18.00) on working days and from 08.00 - 16.00 on Saturdays. Opening hours for sub post offices in small villages vary a great deal.

Working hours
Shops and department stores are open between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., or to 3 p.m. A smaller number of stores close between noon and 4 p.m. Many stores are also open on Sundays, especially in the summer, and a smaller number in the larger cities are open 24 hours a day. Public services and companies usually work from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. from Monday to Friday.
